Analyse budget variances for a given scenario and propose corrective actions
Scenario:
You are working as a financial analyst at XYZ Manufacturing Company. The company produces a product called “Widget” and has recently implemented standard costing to analyse its budget variances. You have been assigned the task of analysing the budget variances for the month of July 2022.
The following data is provided:
Standard quantity of material A per Widget: 2 units
Standard quantity of material B per Widget: 3 units
Standard rate per unit of material A: £5
Standard rate per unit of material B: £8
Actual quantity of material A used: 1,000 units
Actual quantity of material B used: 1,500 units
Actual rate per unit of material A: £6
Actual rate per unit of material B: £9
Your task is to:
- Calculate the material variances (price and usage) for material A and material B.
- Calculate the total material variance.
- Analyse the material variances and explain whether they are favourable or adverse.
- Propose corrective actions to address the material variances.
Instructions:
- Calculate the material variances:
o Material A price variance = (Actual rate per unit of material A – Standard rate per unit of material A) * Actual quantity of material A used
o Material A usage variance = (Actual quantity of material A used – Standard quantity of material A per Widget) * Standard rate per unit of material A
o Material B price variance = (Actual rate per unit of material B – Standard rate per unit of material B) * Actual quantity of material B used
o Material B usage variance = (Actual quantity of material B used – Standard quantity of material B per Widget) * Standard rate per unit of material B
- Calculate the total material variance:
o Total material variance = Material A price variance + Material A usage variance + Material B price variance + Material B usage variance
- Analyse the material variances:
o If the material variance is favourable, explain the reasons behind it and identify any potential areas of improvement.
o If the material variance is adverse, explain the reasons behind it and propose corrective actions to reduce the variance.
- Write a well-structured report summarizing your analysis and proposed corrective actions.
Submission Guidelines:
Submit your report in a PDF format.
Include all calculations and explanations.
Ensure that your report is well-organised and easy to follow.
Good luck!
